Everbright Environment Included in Dow Jones Sustainability Indices for Eighth Consecutive Year

22 December 2023, Hong Kong-China Everbright Environment Group Limited (“Everbright Environment” or the “Company”) (257.HK) has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Emerging Markets Index (the “Index”) for the eighth consecutive year, being one of the six companies from mainland China to be included in the Index in 2023. This year, Everbright Environment was categorised in the Commercial & Professional Services industry group for the assessment, with an overall score of 55, which is considerably higher than the industry average of 23.

This marks another authoritative endorsement to Everbright Environment in sustainable development, following the Company’s inclusion once again in S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook and the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Benchmark Index for the 13th consecutive year in 2023. According to the assessment, there has been a significant improvement in biodiversity and information security and cybersecurity at the Company compared to the previous assessment year. The Company’s performance in specific evaluation areas such as customer relationship management, transparency and reporting, and occupational health and safety is particularly impressive.

In terms of governance, Everbright Environment is well aware that good corporate governance is a core element that drives enterprises’ development and therefore is committed to enhancing its governance level for the long-term. As information technology plays an increasingly important role in business operations, the Company has taken significant measures to enhance information security and cybersecurity. Not only has it intensified technical safeguards, but it has also strengthened relevant systems and professional training, providing better protection for the daily operation and management.

On the social side, Everbright Environment proactively fulfills its duties as a corporate citizen and continuously leverages its environmental protection projects to engage local communities. This year, the Company’s waste-to-energy projects in Shenyang City of Liaoning Province and Xiqing District of Tianjin Municipality were recognised as the national AAA-level Scenic Areas, which marks the Company’s first batch of projects to be granted this honor. This achievement signifies another practical breakthrough for the Company in terms of opening up projects to public visits and facilitating local green development progress, following its efforts in developing “Garden-like Factories”, “Community-friendly Plants” and “Living Rooms of the Cities”.

In terms of environment, despite challenges brought by the global economic situation and intensification of geopolitical frictions to the process of tackling climate change, Everbright Environment insists on providing high-quality and efficient environmental services to protect the safety of living and ecological environment. As of 30 June 2023, the Company had provided approximately 120 billion kWh of green electricity through the treatment of household waste, hazardous and solid waste, and agricultural and forestry waste; and had reduced over 6 million tonnes of chemical oxygen demand emissions through the treatment of waste water and leachate from waste-to-energy plants. In addition, the Company has continued to focus on the “No Net Loss” target for biodiversity this year. It has strengthened biodiversity risk assessments and related practices throughout the entire lifecycle of its projects, from planning to operations. By adopting measures like adopting internationally-recognised biodiversity assessment tools and establishing ecological buffer zones, the Company has not only advanced its business development but also effectively safeguards biodiversity.

The eight-year succession of the world’s most influential sustainable development index constituents not only shows that Everbright Environment ranks among the top 10% of the industry group assessed by the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (the “DJSI series”), but also highlights the Company’s excellent performance in governance, social and environmental dimensions. This is a testament to Everbright Environment’s unwavering dedication and serves as strong evidence of the Company’s continuous efforts and outstanding achievements. Going forward, Everbright Environment will continue to adhere to its original aspiration of carrying out green business and sustainable development philosophies, with the dedication to creating better investment value for investors and undertaking more social responsibility. With the mission of an environmental protection enterprise, the influence of an industry leader and the responsibility of a corporate citizen, Everbright Environment will join hands with all sectors to strive for sustainable development to protect human life and the home planet.

Launched in 1999, the DJSI series is one of the first global indices to track listed companies with the largest scales and leading performance in sustainable development, having become an important reference for investors and enterprises. The DJSI series evaluates the companies’ performance in sustainable development mainly from the governance and economic, environmental and social dimensions. This year, the DJSI series invited more than 13,000 enterprises to participate in the evaluation, of which about 3,500 enterprises qualified. According to the review results, only 106 companies became constituents of the Index.
